How to stay pretty and polished through a sweat session at the gym

Getting physical has a multitude of health and beauty perks, but who says you can’t also sport a winning #FOTD while doing it? Read on to our cop our kikay tips and tricks for sweating it out while staying in style.

Embrace sheer splendor

Working up a sweat brings out the skin’s healthy glow, literally. Make the transition smooth and steady by selecting a sheer or lightweight base that fades as seamlessly as possible back to your bare skin. You can achieve this with a tinted moisturizer like Laura Mercier’s (P2,050 at Rustan’s Beauty Source) or you can “do the dew” with the Clio Nudism Water Grip Cushion (P1,550 at SM Beauty), which has a chok chok finish. If stronger coverage is what you’re after, IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC Cream (P2,560 at SephoraPH) is true to its name while also smoothing skin texture and reducing the appearance of pores. You can set with a touch of translucent powder to improve longevity, even for just a little bit.

Or go hard with the waterproof and long-wear stuff

On the other hand, those who prefer to go hardcore with both their makeup and their exercise routines will appreciate our previously test-driven waterproof makeup recos. And let’s not forget that more beauty brands have embraced #GymLife by specifically designing makeup lines that are meant to be used on those stay-fit sessions. We’re looking at you, Generation Happy Skin Active and Clinique Fit!

Hack it with an impressive concealer

Looking for a one-base wonder? Concealer is the answer! Spot correct blemishes and areas that are prone to excessive post-workout redness. An HG for us PV girls, The Saem Cover Perfection Tip Concealer (P320 at boutiques) was a discovery shared by Kim, and we’ve been fans of its lightweight yet full-coverage awesomeness ever since. I’ve applied it to both my under eye and cheek areas, and it survived an hour of intense hip hop dancing! MAC Pro Longwear Concealer (P1,350 at boutiques) has also been known to survive Liz’s tennis matches. IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Anti-Aging Concealer (P1,730 at SephoraPH) also gets a shoutout for being another sweat-proof pick.

Keeping your kilay

Of course, we have to talk about how to preserve our precious eyebrows while keeping our heart rates up! Experience has taught me that waxier brow products generally tend to cling to skin for better longevity. The Kris Life Kit Brow Liner and Brow Mascara (P275 at Ever Bilena) is a great budget option that you can find in drugstores and department stores. And while you do have to wait for the browcara to set, it doesn’t bleed during workouts. Another sweat-proof pick is the Project Vanity x Ellana Life-Proof Eyebrow Gel (P499 at ellanacosmetics.com) which comes in the shades that you can mix together to match your hair color. Special mention also go to the numerous products in Benefit’s Brow Collection as well as the K-Palette 1 Day Tattoo line.

Game, SET, match

Some things take time, but you know that they’re well-worth the wait. This particularly applies to long-wear eyeshadow sticks, eyeliners, mascaras like Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eye Colour (P1,350 at Rustan’s Beauty Source), K-Palette Real Strong Eyeliner (P945 at Beauty Bar), and Estée Lauder Double Wear Zero-Smudge Lengthening Mascara (around P1,800 at boutiques).

A kiss of color

A fully pigmented lipstick doesn’t quite cut it when you constantly need quick gulps of water. Thus, tinted balms and lip stains are still the best to paint your pout with. Try Clinique Chubby Sticks (P1,050 at Rustan’s Beauty Source), Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm (P545 at SM Beauty), Lipstick Queen Frog Prince (USD25), and Benefit Balms (P1,190 at boutiques).

Now, a note on blush. Call me a cynic, but I haven’t found a lot of blushes that don’t fade to some extent throughout my day, let alone through a gym session. But Liz has been wowed by Marc Jacobs Air Blush (P2,620 at SephoraPH), Cargo Water Resistant Blush (P1,250 at Beauty Bar), and Glossier Cloud Paint (USD18).

If all else fails, start with a cleans slate

Some workouts are more intense than others, or perhaps you simply forget to practice the demure art of towel-dabbing during the heat of the moment. Avoid melting, smudging, and flaking from happening by keeping cleansers in your gym bag to remove your makeup before your gym sesh. For a quick fix, Clinique Post-Workout Face + Body Cleansing Swipes (P450 at Rustan’s Beauty Source) can correct stray makeup or erase the gym FOTD altogether. Althea Korea Pore Purifying Serum Cleanser (P430 at AltheaPH) can banish non-waterproof cosmetics while somehow feeling lighter on the skin than the usual cleansing oil. I also find that the Ra&Gowoori Real Kill 9.9 Cleansers (P390 from Saeli Yuri) lather up nicely without drying out the skin.
