Seven hair color trends to try in 2020

One of my favorite beauty things to do is to contemplate which hair color I’m trying next. Over the years, I’ve experimented with red, done bronde, gone sunkissed with highlights, and I’m currently Team Au Naturel with salt and pepper strands. I love how the color of my hair can change my look without the commitment of chopping or perming my hair strands, and if I don’t like the results, I can just dye it again. If you’re thinking about refreshing your look and need some #inspo, here’s a look at celebrities rocking this year’s trends.

Getting Streaky

90s fashion is now all the rage, so it’s no surprise that even hair trends are making a comeback. Chunky highlights may give off a retro feel but done the right way, the streaks act as a flattering frame to your face. In case you’re not ready to commit though, you can try using clip-on hair extensions to get a feel of the look.

Dip N’ Dyed

The recently concluded popular Kdrama Itaewon Class features a female lead with dip dye hair. As the show’s resident cool girl, Jo Yi-Seo (aka Kim Da-Mi) has an edgy personality that is reflected in her hairstyle. The fun look can be cute or polished, depending on how you style it and where you end the color. Da-Mi’s color is almost up to her ears, which draws more attention to her eyes. You can also try it on just the ends of your hair if you’d like a more subtle look. Check out this guide on how to DIY!

Warming Up

Things are heating up in the color department, especially when Zendaya stepped out in this gorgeous, burgundy shade. Reds bring a certain warmth to your skin tone, but choose wisely. Cool undertones look best in cooler reds like auburn and cinnamon, while warm undertones fit well with copper and chestnut shades.

If you like the warmth but find red too bright, brown is always a good bet and isn’t as difficult to match to your skin color. Explore the full range of browns, from light, almost-blonde browns to rich chocolate tones like Kathryn Bernardo’s tresses.

One And Done

The shorter hair length promoted by models like Kaia Gerber makes a case for chic, single color hairstyles. Without all the frills of fancy hair color, this straightforward style draws attention directly to your face. You can also try this look with bangs for a softer appeal, whether French-inspired like Janella Salvador’s or Korean as per your favorite Kdrama heroine. This is actually one of the easiest trends to jump on as you can just DIY with a box of hair dye

Back To Bold

Maximalist Meets Hair this year as statement color takes over. Try a high contrast color look like Dua Lipa’s which feels like a bolder version of the dip dyed hair. Her blonde hair color on top is heavily shadowed by the black underneath, and can be worn up or down depending on which shade you’d like to play up! You can try this trend in a more temporary way by using a full row of hair extensions underneath lightly colored hair.

Twilight 2020

Just as the vampires in Twilight glitter in the sun, so will your twilight-ed hair this 2020! These strategically placed golden highlights on Selena Gomez mimics the look of twinkling lights shining on her hair. This is the latest hair trend beyond the balayage and is best left to professionals. If your hair feels a bit flat, this may be the look for you as it adds a certain depth and volume to the hair without over the top color.

The New Black

Filipinos normally have dark brown hair but jet black is a much more intense look. Dyeing your hair all black can feel somewhat heavy but Nadine Lustre shows us how this style can be a classic. Her sleek, straight hair paired with minimal makeup gives off a polished vibe, and is very office-appropriate.

To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before star Lana Condor also experiments with blue eyeliner which makes the style more playful. Just keep your black hair as healthy as possible, and it will be part of a great blank canvas that you can dress up or down with makeup.

Do you use hair color to change up your look? Who is your hair color inspiration? Which trend would you like to try?
