Japanese Brand Hada Labo Launches New Moisturizers

Japanese skincare brands always amaze me with minimalist yet effective products, so I was excited to attend the launch of Hada Labo's extension of their iconic skincare line. During the event, there were skincare talks from board-certified dermatologist Dr. Bea Chan and Hada Labo brand manager Jenny Arcellana. Did you know that Hada means “skin” and Labo is short for “laboratory”? The name Hada Labo goes hand in hand with the brand’s philosophy of “Perfect x Simple” and “Nothing more, Nothing less”. This means that their products are formulated without unnecessary ingredients – no alcohol, no mineral oil, no colorants, and no fragrance.

The Premium Whitening Moisturizers complete the Hada Labo 3-step skincare routine to achieve "Glowing, Mochi-Mochi Skin". Glowing is a word I'd love to be used to describe my skin, but what is Mochi-Mochi Skin? It's the Japanese ideal skin of having a smooth, plump and bouncy texture similar to the mochi rice cake. Compared to the Korean Glass Skin ideal, Mochi-Mochi Skin is more matte and velvety though both aim for a clear and seemingly-poreless skin.

To get optimum results, Hada Labo advises to use all three steps starting with the Hada Labo Premium Whitening Face Wash (P385 for 100g). This can be used twice a day and is notably non-drying on my already dry and dehydrated skin type. I don’t get the tight feeling after that’s almost synonymous with harsher cleansers.

Step 2 is the Hada Labo Shirojyun Premium Whitening Lotion Light (P195 for 30ml, P685 for 170ml). If you're wondering how this is different from the best-selling white (Gokujyun) Hada Labo Lotion, Liz previously compared the two in a separate article. During the event, I learned that you are supposed to apply this to slightly damp skin after cleansing and using just your fingers. This avoids the product from being excessively absorbed by the palms of our hands.

The last step is the newly launched moisturizers that have 3X Brightening Power thanks to Niacinamide, Alpha-Arbutin, and Vitamin C. This combination of ingredients brightens, enhances the skin tone, and fights dark spots. I chose the Hada Labo Premium Whitening Water Cream (P850 for 50g) which is suitable for all skin types, since the Water Gel (P850 for 50g) is most suitable for normal to oily skin.

Hydration may not always be visible on the skin immediately, so a skin analysis meter was used at the event to check the hydration levels of the attendees before and after applying the moisturizers. I have a small device that does the same and a quick check reveals hydrated skin immediately after application.

When the Hada Labo products are used all together, my skin feels and looks more hydrated instantly. I also layer the lotion from time to time for an added boost. All products in the Hada Labo Premium Whitening line are available at Watsons stores and online, as well as the official Mentholatum Lazada and Shopee stores.
