Which Of These 7 Mascara Types Is The Best For Your Lashes?

Product photography by Perkin Gotohio

Navigating the vast array of mascara options on the market can be a confusing task. Each product comes with its own set of promises – lengthening, volumizing, curling – the list goes on. But what do these terms really mean for you and your lashes? Today, I'm here to cut through the clutter and provide a clear, straightforward breakdown of mascara types and what those labels on the packaging actually signify.

First things first: all mascaras are meant to enhance your lashes in different ways. The trick is to identify what your lashes actually need, and then go from there. Second, some mascaras have different labeling or descriptors in the packaging, but work the same way. One mascara type may also have other features; some mascaras are fiber and curling mascaras, some can be both nourishing and volumizing. I’ve still categorized them differently so each one has a proper description. Finally, and this is important: whatever mascara you choose, you won’t get the promised effect if you don’t curl your lashes correctly beforehand. I recommend the Ever Bilena Eyelash Lift Curler (P165) for that, which I’ve talked about in this TiktTok video (plus an extra explainer in this video as well).

Let's strip away the fluff and get down to the essentials, so you can choose your mascara with confidence!

1. Volumizing Mascara

Best For: Achieving thicker, fuller lashes.

How It Works: Volumizing formulas are enriched with waxes (like beeswax or carnauba wax) and silicone polymers that adhere to each lash. These ingredients thicken the lashes by creating multiple layers upon application. This makes each lash appear more substantial and dense, thus creating an overall voluminous effect.

2. Lengthening Mascara

Best For: Adding length to shorter lashes.

How It Works: Lengthening mascaras are formulated with rayon or nylon fibers that attach to the natural tips of your lashes. These microscopic fibers build upon the ends of each lash, effectively extending their length. The formula is also designed to be more liquid, allowing a smooth application that coats each lash from root to tip without clumping.

You can try the EB Pro XL Lashes Lengthening Mascara (P295) which creates longer, blacker lashes with a couple of coats.

3. Curling Mascara

Best For: Lifting and curling straight or drooping lashes.

How It Works: Curling mascaras use a lighter, more flexible formula that can hold the lashes in a curved shape. They often contain film-forming agents that contract as they dry, helping to keep the lashes in a curled position. The wand is also crucial – typically curved or arched – working in tandem with the formula to mechanically lift and bend the lashes.

4. Waterproof Mascara

Best For: Long-lasting wear that resists moisture and smudging.

How It Works: Waterproof formulas set completely solid, containing waxes and silicone polymers that repel water. This composition makes them resistant to moisture, tears, and sweat. However, they require an oil-based makeup remover for proper removal, as they are not water-soluble.

5. Nourishing Mascara

Best For: Sensitive eyes and lash conditioning.

How It Works: These mascaras are infused with vitamins (like Vitamin E), oils (such as argan or jojoba oil), and proteins (like keratin) that nourish and strengthen the lashes. They're designed to provide a gentle, hypoallergenic formula that enhances lash health while still offering the desired aesthetic benefits.

6. Fiber Mascara

Best For: Dramatic length and volume.

How It Works: Fiber mascaras contain small fibers (often silk, rayon, or nylon) that adhere to your natural lashes, creating additional length and volume. These fibers attach to the lashes when the mascara is applied, effectively building up length and fullness akin to wearing false lashes.

I find that the EB All Day Extensify Fiber Mascara (P250) delivers a dramatic effect because of the fibers in the formula; you’ll really see it build thin lashes.

7. Tubing Mascara

Best For: Easy removal and long-lasting wear.

How It Works: Tubing formulas use a special polymer that wraps around each individual lash, creating distinct 'tubes'. This technique offers exceptional staying power and is resistant to smudging and flaking. They are easily removed with warm water, as the tubes slide off the lashes without the need for harsh makeup removers.

Each mascara type brings its unique benefits and works differently to enhance your lashes. By understanding these technical aspects, you can better navigate the world of mascaras and pick the one that suits your lash goals perfectly. Here's to batting those beautiful lashes with confidence and knowledge! 💫👁️💖
