Korean Makeup Trend Alert: Topping Makeup

Here at Project Vanity, we love trying out all things Korean. From their makeup to their skincare and even their favorite shows! This time, we’re trying out K-idol Jung So-min’s makeup application technique called “Topping Makeup”.

Her On-Style’s “Get It Beauty” episode featured the actress applying her own makeup using the technique for an interview shoot. Because her makeup artists were late, she did a quick take on the No-Makeup Makeup look using just three products – stick foundation, liquid concealer, and cream blush. The key was to apply all the products on the face before blending everything together!

I don't have any Korean products at the moment but let’s see if we can do “Topping Makeup” as effortlessly as she made it look with the products I have.

Step 1: Frame your face. Using a creamy foundation, swipe on the areas that you don’t contour to bring them forward – the center of the forehead, the sides of the cheeks, and on the chin. I'm using L’Oreal True Match Genius 4-in-1 Primer + Foundation + Concealer + Powder in Shade G2 Gold Porcelain.

Step 2: Using a liquid concealer (or a lighter shade foundation that doesn’t suit you since getting a summer tan), place dots on the areas you normally conceal: under the eyes, sides of the nose and mouth, and chin. You can also highlight by dotting on the bridge of the nose. I used Koh Gen Do Aqua Foundation SPF25 PA++ in Shade 013.

Step 3: Get a buffing brush and lightly swirl over the cream blush. Dab on your cheeks to leave the product behind in a circular shape. I applied Bourjois Cream Blush in Shade 02 on my cheeks.

At this point, none of the products I've applied has been blended in yet so yeah, it's going to look kinda funny.

Step 4: With your foundation, concealer and blush all on your face, you can now blend, blend, blend! Use a clean buffing brush to blend everything together.

Step 5: Using the same cream blush, pat lightly all over your eyelids as well as on your lips for a natural looking flush.

Step 6: Curl your lashes and you’re good to go!

One thing we noticed from the original video – she didn’t do her eyebrows! So we’re adding it as an optional step to our list.
