Selfless by Hyram Skincare vs Hello Glow: Where do the similarities start and end?

Do you ever see products and think, wait, this looks a lot like this other one that came before it? It’s becoming more and more common as supply chains become global. The good news for us here in the Philippines is that our local brands are truly world-class and highly competitive, with brands like Hello Glow (under Ever Bilena) investing heavily in their product development. I love that they have their ears on the ground and commit to making products that can go toe-to-toe with other global brands.

And so it came to pass that Selfless by Hyram launched around June of 2021, and it looks super similar to the Hello Glow Advanced Rejuvenating Set (P360 at Lazada) which came out in November 2020. Hyram Yarbo is one of the biggest skincare influencers in the world. When his Selfless by Hyram line came out under The Inkey List, everyone was excited but at the same time disappointed by the price tag. The facial wash for instance is P1,200 a tube! So, can the 360-peso Hello Glow Advanced Rejuvenating Set compete? Let’s do a quick comparison!

The most similar products are the Selfless by Hyram Centella and Green Tea Daily Gel Cleanser (P1,200 at Sephora.ph) and the Hello Glow Low pH Hydrating Cleanser. They have the exact same gel consistency and lather the same way. The pH level is similar too - the Selfless cleanser reads at a pH of 5 while the Hello Glow cleanser reads at 5.5-6.

Both have green tea extract in the ingredients list, but what’s nice about the Hello Glow cleanser is that it features ceramides. It’s a fantastic ingredient for increasing skin smoothness and hydration! I think for this round the Hello Glow cleanser is a clear winner. I just wish that they have a separate one that’s 100-150ml, like the Selfless cleanser!

The Hello Glow set also has the Nourishing Night Cream, which is a less expensive alternative to the Selfless Retinol & Rainbow Algae Repair Serum, which clocks in at P1,755 for 30ml. Both serums have the same super lightweight watery gel consistency, but feature different actives. The Nourishing Night Cream has niacinamide, bakuchiol, hyaluronic acid, and centella asiatica to brighten skin, while the Selfless Repair Serum  has retinol and algae as its main hitters.

Each serum has its own benefits. I love retinol for age-management, but if you’re not there yet, the Hello Glow Night Cream is a good lightweight yet hydrating serum. I would recommend it for oily, blemish-prone skin! The cleanser too is fantastic as it’s low pH and gentle.

The two brands are speaking to different demographics, but it was fun to compare some of their products side by side. The packaging itself has been done before by other brands of course, but each brand has their strengths. Which one do you think is best for you?
