Finally, metallics we can wear: The Revlon Metallic Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor
I’ll be honest: I began this assignment with extreme prejudice against a metallic lip, cursing my editor (jk) and the laze-enabling weather. But after a little experimentation, I’m happy to report that I can now consider the metallic lip as a bonafide option in my lip arsenal, thanks to the Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolors (P575).
Let’s begin with that title though. I don’t know why they’re called ‘Ultra HD.’ Are they made for UHD/QHD video like certain Make Up For Ever products? Because if so, at 1080 pixels, they look more like sparkly gloss rather than a metallic lip, and the pigmentation is not at 100% opacity. The ‘matte’ designation is also a misnomer as these do not dry nor look matte, even after hours of wear. They feel the same as L’Oreal Pro-Matte Glosses (another confusing term), and actually look like gloss when worn alone.
A better use for these is as a lip topper to similar (or contrasting, if you’re creative) colors to bring out its ‘metallic’ properties, make them look more opaque, and make them last longer from two to four hours. Since they don’t dry matte, they’re not drying, or emphasize lip cracks, and they actually create a more pouty lip. If you’re into that, let’s tackle some lip combos!
715 HD Glow will probably look better on those lighter than NC35 (which is my coloring), but this golden, brown nude can work over a nude lip pencil such as Detail Cosmetics’ lip liner in William (if you’re lighter than NC35), a darker brown like the H&M Lip Pencil in Choc Therapy, or Project Vanity x Pink Sugar These Lips Don’t Lie in Love at First Swipe, to bring out the golden tones.
690 HD Gleam is the pinkier sister of Glow, although even less opaque. This works well with a pink lip liner that is similar in tone like Etude House’s Soft Touch Auto Lip Liner in 01 or Kylie Cosmetics Lip Liner in Candy K, for a delectable candy lip look, without venturing into the bubblegum territory.
I thought I was going to hate 700 HD Flare, but it ended up being such a flattering, party-appropriate color! This is like the metallic version of Maybelline’s Creamy Matte Lipstick in Chili Nude, which is an orange-red. It's perfect for those who want to sport a red lip that’s a little bit different and a little bit ‘less intimidating.’
680 HD Glam will please all of the mauve fanatics, and can actually become the gateway product to the metal lip, since it’s the shade closest to what we’re used to. Simply diffuse this over something like Detail Cosmetics’ Lip Liner in Ethan, literallyanymauvelipstickyouhave, or Marc Jacobs Lip Liner in (Prim)Rose to add a metallic shine to your MLBB collections.
705 HD Shine is my surprise favorite. The only shade that can be used alone, it can have full coverage that creates a luscious and deep metallic pouty lip; I actually feel some sort of ~sexy in this! To increase longevity, you can wear it with a maroon, brick, or burgundy red lip like Sleek’s Matte Lipstick in Dare, Happy Skin x Preview Moisturizing Matte Lippie in Hot Stuff, or Kat Von D’s Lolita.
710 HD Dazzle is perfect for unicorn lovers as it produces a very saturated purple with a slight blue shift. Wear it on a really bright pink such as MAC’s Retro Matte Lipstick in Candy Yum Yum to up the crazy, or create a balance with something like Pony Effect’s Stayfit Matte Lip Colour in #So Good, or Too Faced Melted Fig.
You don’t really see a lot of unconventional colors in the drugstore market, so I commend Revlon for being more adventurous with 720 HD Luster (as well as HD Glitz below). On top of Melt Cosmetics matte lipstick in Space Cake, Luster fulfills the intergalactic fantasy: perfect for the winter holidays or your next #metal show (pun intended). If you don’t have a grey lipstick (which, note to self, you should wear more), you can just use a grey or silver eyeliner.
685 HD Glitz is the most interesting color to me in-tube, but it’s also the patchiest shade. The more conventional colors will mix better with natural lip colors, of course, but even on top of a black lipstick like The Estée Edit’s Lip Flip Shade Transformer in Turn Down, you can see how it has moved the product around. Perhaps a more matte first layer will create a better canvas but Glitz is great for creating a sort of mini nebula on your lip. Maybe.
The Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolors aren’t perfect, but they’re exactly what you need if you want to foray into the metallic lip. While they do vary in opacity, they work great as lip toppers, and are an affordable alternative to higher end and too drying options. You really don’t see these finishes and shades in the drugstore that often. The lippies are priced at P575 each but Revlon is currently offering a bundle price of P895 for THREE lippies as part of their holiday treat! Promo is available until December 31.
What lip combos would you do? Let’s discuss.
