Event Recap + Review: The New Estée Lauder Pure Color Love Lipsticks

What makes a luxe lipstick worth the splurge? With so many great options at the drugstore, the pressure is on for more expensive bullets to hit the mark. More than just pretty packaging and brand prestige, the formula ought to be mind-blowingly good.

If you're looking to purchase your first high-end lippie or a new addition to your collection, you need to check out the Estée Lauder Pure Color Love Lipstick (P1,275)! At an exclusive lipstick party, the brand launched 25 new lipsticks in four different finishes – ultra mattes, shimmer pearls, cooled chromes, and edgy crèmes. The PV team got right to swatching and playing with all of the shades, which are designed to be mixed and layered on for fun, new combinations. You can watch our live video for swatches and mini reviews but here’s the rundown of our thoughts now that we’ve tested the bullets more!

All of the Pure Color Love lipsticks have a unique flat line top that might take some bit of getting used to. Infused with Pomegranate, Mango, and Acai oils, the formula is designed to condition and soften the lips with wear. The lipsticks have a fragrant vanilla smell that fades away after a few minutes. At P1,275 per tube, it’s the most affordable of the brand's lipstick offerings but it doesn't scrimp on quality or display-worthy packaging.

Ultra Mattes

Hot Streak, Raw Sugar, Blasé Buff, Proven Innocent, Naughty-Nice, Rebel Glam, Rosy Xcess, Burning Love, Juiced Up, Love Object, Up Beet, Bar Red, Shock & Awe

The runaway winner of this new launch is undoubtedly the Ultra Mattes, which are available in 13 shades. Creamy and pigmented with comfortable wear, this puts a lot of liquid lipsticks to shame with the 12-hour wear time that you can squeeze out of a single application. While it’s not transfer-proof as per most bullet lipsticks go, it somehow stays on looking freshly applied even after numerous snacking and meals. They glide on smoothly and leave a nice stain without drying out the lips. If you must get anything from the line, make it one of the Ultra Mattes.

Shimmer Pearls

Flash & Chill, Ripped Raisin, Sly Wink, Sky High, Haute & Cold

The Shimmer Pearls are sadly more hit or miss. They have a balmy texture with sheer pigmentation which you can build to a good medium opacity. The finish is comfortable without the grit and slick that you’ll expect from lipsticks with micro-shimmer. If you have pigmented lips though, this might end up looking uneven and splotchy because of the sheerness.

Edgy Cremes

Strapless, Hot Rumor, Wild Poppy, Crazy Beautiful, Pret-A-Party, Radical Chick

The Edgy Cremes have the comfortable finish with a look that’s friendly for everyday wear. One swipe will give you medium opacity with a smooth, juicy looking finish. It sits nicely on the lips without slipping and sliding awkwardly. The wear time is as good as your next meal or around 4 hours without eating. They aren’t as rich, creamy, and silky as the Pure Color Envy crème lipsticks (P1,700) which hug the lips perfectly, but they’re also cheaper by almost 500 bucks.

Cooled Chromes

Moon Rock, Pocket Venus, Nova Noir

We were especially surprised and excited to test the three chrome shades in the new collection. If you know your brands, you’ll know that this is a big (futuristic?) step for Estée Lauder to take given their reputation of sticking with the classics. The Cooled Chromes can be layered over any lipstick but also interesting to wear on their own.

Overall, we highly recommend the Ultra Mattes from this line and even the Cooled Chromes if you want to create some #LipLoveRemix. You can layer and mix these lipsticks together and even play up your lip game with some pretty easy lip art using the line. Ladies, it's time to get swatching!
