New Year, All Clear: How To Declutter Your Closet and Beauty Stash

There’s something magical about January, isn’t there? The fresh, crisp feeling of a brand-new year is like opening a blank notebook—it’s full of possibility and promise. For me, the start of the year is also the perfect time to take stock of what I have, especially when it comes to my closet and beauty stash. After all, how can we move forward when we’re still holding on to things that don’t serve us anymore?

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the idea of decluttering, don’t worry. You’re not alone here. It can feel intimidating, even emotional, to let go of items we once loved (or thought we’d love). But here’s the thing: decluttering isn’t about just throwing everything away. It’s about keeping what adds value to your life and letting go of the rest, guilt-free. Ready? Let’s do this.

Step 1: Start with a Clear Intention

Before anything else, I like to ask myself why I’m doing this. Do I want to make getting dressed in the morning easier? Do I want my beauty routine to feel streamlined and fuss-free? Am I holding onto things that no longer feel like “me”? Having a clear intention gives your decluttering process purpose, and makes it easier to stick with it.

For me, one of my resolutions is to have a tighter, more carefully curated closet with forever pieces. I’m done with disposable fashion so I need to make space for items that I’ll keep for at least a decade minimum.

Step 2: Rediscover What Really Makes Your Heart Sing

The best way to start decluttering your closet is to take everything out. Yes, everything. Lay it all on your bed so you can see exactly what you’re working with. It might feel like chaos at first, but trust me, this step is crucial. Once everything is out, start sorting your clothes into categories: tops, dresses, jeans, coats, and so on.

Now comes the fun (and slightly emotional) part: trying everything on. As you do, ask yourself some key questions:

  • Does this fit me right now? Not “when I lose five pounds” or “if I ever need it for a themed party.”

  • Have I worn this in the last six months? If not, why?

  • Does this spark joy? Yes, I’m borrowing Marie Kondo here, but it works. Does it make you feel confident, beautiful, or comfortable?

What I’ve learned over the years is that it’s okay to let go of things, yes, even the expensive ones that you swore you’d wear someday. That jacket you bought on sale but never actually liked? It’s served its purpose. Letting go isn’t wasteful because it’s actually freeing you to explore more things.

Step 2: Clear Out the Clutter

Beauty products are harder to part with, aren’t they? There’s this voice in my head that says, But what if I need this neon green eyeshadow someday? Reality check: I’ve been saying that for three years, and I’ve still never worn it outside the house.

Start by gathering all your beauty products like makeup, skincare, hair tools into one spot. Sort them by type: lipsticks, foundations, serums, etc. Then, take a closer look. Check expiration dates first. Yes, even that unopened moisturizer from two years ago might not be good anymore. If it’s expired or smells off, it’s time to toss it.

For the products that are still good but unused, ask yourself why you’re holding onto them. Does this product actually work for your skin type? Does it make you feel beautiful? If the answer is no, it’s time to pass it on. Gently used products can often be shared with friends or family, and some brands even have recycling programs for empty packaging.

Step 3: Enough with the Guilt

Letting go can feel a little sad, especially if the item was a gift or something you spent a lot on. But here’s how I look at it: each piece has already served its purpose, even if that purpose was simply teaching you what doesn’t work for you. It’s okay to say goodbye.

Decluttering is never about punishment or regret. It’s about creating space for what truly makes you happy and removing distractions that confuse your sense of style.

Step 4: Organize

Once you’ve pared down to what you love, it’s time to organize. For your closet, invest in slim hangers that save space and make everything look more cohesive. Group your clothes by category or color—it’s oddly satisfying and makes finding what you need so much easier.

For your beauty stash, acrylic desk drawers and containers are a game-changer. I like to keep my everyday essentials in one spot, so I’m not rummaging through piles of products every morning. And here’s a tip: create a little “use-it-up” section for items that are almost finished or nearing expiration. It’s a great way to avoid waste.

Step 5: Move Forward with Intention

Decluttering isn’t just a one-time event; it’s a mindset. Moving forward, try adopting a “one in, one out” rule: for every new item you bring in, let go of something old. Be intentional with your purchases. Ask yourself if that new foundation or dress really fills a gap in your collection—or if it’s just an impulse buy.

Remember, minimalism isn’t about owning the least amount of stuff. It’s about owning the right stuff—the things that make your life better, brighter, and more beautiful.

There’s something so satisfying about looking at a decluttered closet or a pared-down beauty stash. I hope that with these tips, you’ll find it easier to get dressed, quicker to do your makeup, and less stressed about the clutter in your life.

So here’s to starting the year with less and making space for more of what matters. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself later.
