Zit Management 101: Six ways to treat your skin with respect during a breakout

This story is brought to you by Unilab.

Having acne as teenagers felt like a life-ending event, but as adults, our reaction is more of sainted resignation. By now we know it’s a phase and is hardly the end of anything. At most it’s extra hassle than we care to deal with, but we know it can be beaten! Panic is now optional and there are so many ways to treat our skin with care and respect.

Here’s our advice on how to manage your acne without resorting to scorched earth tactics!

Double cleanse. Pimples are often caused by improper cleansing, especially if you like to wear heavy makeup. Products leave residue on our skin if not removed completely so it’s important to take off everything before you proceed to skincare! Even if you just wear sunscreen, it’s still best to double cleanse (either with micellar water, a makeup wipe, or oil first, then proceed to your preferred facial wash) to get your face 100% clear.

With proper cleansing, your face will feel less oily and just generally healthier.

Mask up. Masks are a godsend to those whose skin is on the ropes. Clogged pores may lead to acne so remove all that junk inside by using mud masks! This type of mask is highly efficient in drawing out oil and dirt from our pores; if blackheads give you a headache, you must use the power of mud to compel them out of your face.

Exfoliate to remove the dead skin. Dead skin is part of the natural cycle of our life as human beings, so don’t worry about it - moisturize properly and let it shed off cleanly. Dead skin only causes a problem when you leave it on top of your face as it ends up harboring bacteria and contributing to clogged pores! Use a gentle exfoliator to remove that dead layer of skin regularly. If you have acne already, mild exfoliation will help you slough off the top layer of those pimples to allow the “core” to come out and dry faster.

Use acne gel (or creams) to disinfect and hasten the drying process. Acne gels and creams contain ingredients that have anti-bacterial and exfoliating properties. They shorten the life span of pimples by killing the bacteria on the surface and drying it out more quickly versus leaving it to its own devices. When applying this type of product, make sure to only put it on the affected spot; don’t get it on the rest of your skin!

Apply moisturizer at least twice a day. Choose a moisturizer that’s lightweight and oil-free, something that’s made for sensitive skin. You must keep your skin hydrated so that it glows and never feels tight after all the treatments you’ve done previously.

Take Lactezin® twice a day to fix your pimple problem from within. Unilab’s new pimple-fighting pill features lactoferrin as its active ingredient. Basically, it helps to minimize the redness and inflammation of spots. Along with Vitamin E (an antioxidant that protects from sun damage) and Zinc (to hasten the healing of lesions), you get a powerful supplement that will put you on the road to better #skinhealth.

Lactezin® is available over the counter at your favorite drugstores for P20 per pill. Both men and women can use it, and there’s no need to get a prescription from a dermatologist to avail of it. Of course, it’s still best to consult with your doctor before trying it out, especially if you have a condition or if you’re taking any other medication.

Hope this helps, ladies! If you have more tips about how you manage your acne, we’d love to hear it!
