Complete swatches + Review: The new Careline Liquid Lipsticks

We've already talked about Careline's millennial rebrand, so now it's time to turn our gaze to their star product: the Liquid Lipsticks! Admittedly Careline is a little late in the game, but it makes up for it by offering 13 shades, three of which are metallic and some in surprisingly crazy colors. This is such a huge step for what before was a brand that seemed stuck in the early aughts.

So how are these lipsticks, really?

Both the Careline Matte Liquid Lipstick and Melted Metallic Lipstick are sold for P195. There are 10 mattes and three metallics, with varying degrees of quality per shade. Some are creamy and comfortable on the lips while others patchy and flaky. Staying power is good overall at six hours before fading from the center, and if you're careful, you won't need to retouch after your first meal. Both lipstick types are scentless and tasteless.

These lipsticks have a matte formula so do prime your lips with a thick layer of balm and make sure they're exfoliated well. That being said, I think that there are a few shades worth the purchase and some extra prep time. Let's find out which!

The Careline Matte Liquid Lipstick has an interesting selection of nudes, browns, and colors off the beaten track. I mean just look at Wallflower, a muted greyish blue! Who does that locally? Most brands won't invest in these shades! It's too much risk.

For the record, Dark Matter is a beautiful muted purple. It's just unfortunately patchy. Wearing a dark lip liner underneath should help it render better, IF you care to make it work. I'd go for it for parties as I don't have a color like this yet.

Wallflower is a wtf shade, but it suits me, strangely enough. It's also patchy but not as much as Dark Matter.

Out of the shades here, I recommend the following:

  • Glaze, a millennial muted mauve pink. This has good pigmentation and feels thin on the lips. It toes the fine line between zombie and chic - love it!
  • Gotta Go, a peachy nude that should work nicely for warm medium skin tones.
  • Brick'd, a brick brown. It looks so similar to Tutu but if you have to choose, go with Brick'd! It just renders better and is slightly more warm. This is also opaque in one layer.
  • In Bloom, a fire engine red.

The Melted Metallic Lipstick has a lustrous metallic finish that's right on trend. Because of the metallic pigments though, it does highlight lip lines! These colors can be layered to be worn as is but for maximum comfort, I would recommend wearing a thin, thin layer on top of lipstick or lip liner to get a more full-bodied, less line-y finish.

At two layers, these lipsticks can feel flaky. This is my experience with all the other metallic liquid lipsticks I've tried (Colourpop, Makeup Factory, and Detail) - again, because of the pigments used - so these are not my favorite things to wear alone. On top of another lip color though, they're certainly fabulous!

Luster is such a pretty rose gold, don't you think? Live Wire is a deeper metallic rose, while Prince is a fuchsia purple with bluish pigments. I love Prince the most, sheer as it may be - it would look soooo good on top of bright pink or magenta lipstick! Just imagine it. I'll wear it like that one of these days and post on Instagram.

Overall, I suggest you try the Careline Liquid Lipsticks if you're looking for affordable AND interesting colors you may not have yet. These are only P195, remember, so now is your chance to try a rose gold metallic lip or a blue grungy one. It really depends on your preference. Personally, I like what the brand is trying to do and I want to see more of it in the future.

What do you think of these lipsticks? Have you tried any of them so far?
