I got fascinated with this concept after reading Joanne Harris's (of Chocolat fame) short story on Victorian beauty rituals. It's incidentally told from the view point of a Chanel perfumer. Anyway! This article from Illinois Times is about makeup in the 1800's. Lead and beef in your face? No? How about some sperm whale wax on your lips? By god everyone must stink then.
